Too Little Too Late (Max)

He closed his eyes and fell asleep.

She had moved sometime during the night to her own side of the bed without realising it. She was still fast asleep.

He woke up the next morning and smiled softly at his sleeping wife

James was up and was play with his letter blocks spelling words. He spelled something a little boy shouldn't even know yet. He had spelled, 'sex'. Buddy was keeping an eye on him. Krystal didn't want to move right now. She wasn't feeling very good. She had her hands pressed to her lower stomach while she was sleeping.

Max got worried. "Bady, are you okay?" he asked. Miley was laying with the puppies awake

Krystal woke up and suddenly shock her head no and rushed into the bathroom before getting sick in the toilet. She fell on her knees once she finished and flushed the toilet. She knew what was wrong and it was a miracle. "Max, I need you to get me one of my tests from the top shelf in the medicaine cabinet," she called. Buddy went to Miley and licked her face saying good morning and that he loves her. James left four words on the floor and he crawled to the plan pen and climbed into it to play with his toys. He had left the words, 'sex' , 'death', 'murder' and 'blood' written with blocks on the floor.

Miley licked his face back saying good morning and that she loves him too. Max nodded and got out of bed. He went to the bathroom and grabbed on of her tests. He handded it to her.

She took it from him and quickly took the test and closed it waiting for the results to come back from it. She smiled softly hoping it was a miracle that had given her another baby to carry for him. "Max, if it's positive we'll have a miracle happening," she said. She wished it would be positive as she wanted to have another child with him. James was playing with his stuffed dog and plastic vet tools trying to be a vet. Buddy wagged his tail and laid down next to Miley and rubbed his face into her fur.

He smiled and hugged her in his arms. He kissed her lips and smiled. Miley gently wagged her tail and the puppies woke up. They started to play with each other and Miley watched them.

Krystal watched the test and suddenly tears slipped from her eyes. "Max, look at the test," she said. She held it out to him. It had a negative sign on it. That normally meant that she wasn't pegnant. But, she was sure her feeling sick and suddenly getting sick is signs of being pregnant. James fell asleep hugging his toy dog. Buddy licked Miley's fur to clean it for her. He wanted to treat her like he used to. Shooter was curled up in the spare room sleeping and sometimes chewing on his bandages.

Miley closed her eyes enjoying the attention she was getting from Buddy. Max gently brushed the tears away with his thumb and took the test with other hand. He put it down on the counter and kissed both of her cheeks.

Krystal sighed and looked at him. "I want a miracle to happen for us, Max. I want to be able to carry another child. But, seeing that test proves it. We can probably never have another child that I can carry," she said. She had moved and buried her face into his chest. Buddy kept licking Miley's fur just showing her how much he had missed her over the past few months.

He held her and kissed the top of her head. "I know, baby." he said softly. Miley watched Buddy with loving eyes

She sighed and relaxed in his arms. "My doctor did say that if a miracle happened and I concived the baby probably wouldn't live through the birth," she said. Her tears had finally stopped. Buddy kept licking Miley's fur. He knew soon they'd both need a bath. He knew Shooter would need one to clean the wounds a little bit.

He sighed softly and held her. He picked her up and sat on the bed. He put her in his lap and held her. Miley looked at Buddy and gently licked his face.

Buddy licked Miley back. Krystal started to calm down. "We have a child to take care of," she said. James was waking up and he was hungry.

He nodded. "I'll go take care of the dogs and you can take care of James." he said softly

"Okay, sounds like a plan. But, what if James wants you to take care of him," she said. She got off his bed and pulled his robe off the hock by the bathroom and wrapped herself in it not knowing what he'd do. James was crying and wanting his dad not his mom. Buddy was finally happy again. He was back where he belonged and he was liking being with Miley again.

He sighed softly. "Okay. I can take care of James and you can take care of the dogs." he said. He walked out of the bedroom and went to James's bedroom. He walked to James and smiled. He picked him up and carried him to the kitchen.

James instantly stopped crying when he got picked up. "Daddy, I'm hungry," he said. Krystal had gone into James's room and looked at the blocks and wrote down the words knowing something must be wrong with him. She then went and put food in with Shooter and filled the bowls for Miley and Buddy. Buddy got up and gently pulled on Miley's ar as he went to go eat. Shooter was already eating.

Miley got up and the puppies had already nursed. The puppies were sleeping and Miley went to her food dish. She looked at Shooter and whinnied softly to him. Max smiled and nodded. He carried James to the kitchen and put him down in a chair. He got James his breakfast and put it down in front of him.

James started to eat his breakfast. Krystal went outside to get the kiddy pool ready to bath Shooter before she took him to get him nuetured. Shooter woofed at Miley and knew that the puppies he had with her were the last he could ever have. Buddy finished his food and went to lay on the big dog bed with the puppies to watch them for Miley.

Miley ate her breakfast and she went to where Buddy was. Max smiled at his son and he started to eat his breakfast.

Shooter limped outside and let Krystal bath him. She gently ran the soapy spounge over his sore spots. Buddy wagged his tail seeing Miley and woofed at her. He was telling her he was watching her puppies for her so she could nap for a while. James ate his breakfast and giggled. "Daddy, why is mommy taking Shooter to the vet again?" he asked.

Miley wagged her tail and laid down near Buddy and the puppies. Miley fell asleep and Max sighed. "He needs to get his shots." he said to James
